Geological study warns of three major earthquakes to hit Cairo in coming years
CAIRO: A geological study warned that in the coming few years Cairo might be subject to three destructive earthquakes that could measure a staggering 7 degrees on the Richter scale.
The study conducted by Egyptian geologist Taha Mohamed Abul Azayem, predicts that the point of initial rupture of the strongest of the three earthquakes will be south west Cairo, precisely around
Dahshour.
That same area was the epicenter of the most destructive earthquake to hit Egypt in 1992.
Preparing Students for Geosciences of the Future
By:Cathryn A. Manduca, Heather Macdonald and Geoff Feiss
Students graduating from geosciences programs today can pursue a wide variety of careers. No matter where they go, they will encounter modern geoscience research that brings together traditional field observation and laboratory work with powerful new tools such as satellite-based remote sensing of Earth, computational modeling of complex systems and data visualization on all scales. Last year, geoscience faculty gathered together in a series of workshops to consider how to best prepare students for these opportunities.
